WATCHING-
Crazy Ex-Girlfriend (2 seasons on Netflix): Severely emotionally
damaged woman moves across the country to try to get back together with her
summer camp boyfriend. LOVE this show so much that I was sad for a couple of
days when I finished. I hate musicals. I thought it might be a good show to
have on in the background when cleaning, but it's super addicting. (I do
sometimes skip over the musical numbers.) It's crazy and stupid and so funny. I
do regularly sing some of the songs I like (West Covina, Period Sex, Love
Kernels, Rush to Be a Bride). Don't YouTube Rush to Be a Bride. You have to see
it in the show. The transition is part of how amazing it is. THIS IS NOT A SHOW
TO WATCH WITH KIDS OR YOUR PARENTS. NSFAnything really. New season on the CW
starts October 13!
Friends from College (1 season Netflix show): People who would
normally be okay turn into severely emotionally damaged people when they are
around their college friends. And they can't stop being around each other. None
of the characters are likable, but, again, I LOVE this show. It's dark, but
funny. If you were super into the Wonder Years, Fred Savage in this show will
make you so happy.
Life in Pieces (CBS show watched on Netflix): It's about
siblings and their families. It's really funny sometimes, but sometimes it's
offensive. Also, fairly unlikable and damaged characters. (Hmmmmm . . . I'm
sensing a theme.)
Master of None (2 seasons Netflix show): Such a quietly good
show. I'm not sure how to describe it. It's smart and weirdly sweet and feels
so real.
The Incredible Jessica James (Neflix Movie): Great movie about
an aspiring playwright in a transitional period. Master of None vibes.
August: Osage County: Brutal portrait of a brutal family. So
emotionally damaged they made the characters from Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and
Friends from College seem like a bunch of Mr. Rogers. Emotional torture porn.
It was over the top, but I liked it.
Catastrophe (3rd season Amazon Prime): Great show about being
married with kids. Also, very emotionally damaged people.
20th Century Women (Amazon Prime): Good, but forgettable. Not
emotionally healthy characters, but set in the 80s, I think. (But I'm starting
to wonder who is at this point.)
The Loveless (Amazon Prime): Willem Dafoe's first movie, I
think. About a group of young bikers raising hell. Not bad.
The Accountant (HBO): An alright Ben Affleck movie. Kept my
attention.
Fences (In-Flight Movie): I am so sick and tired of movies about
trash men being redeemed . . . by nothing other than their existence. I wonder
if the guys who write these movies (see also St. Vincent)/plays are also pieces
of shit who think they're not and just want to show the world that they have a
reason for being pieces of shit, so it's okay. SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS Oh,
you wanted to laugh a little? You needed some laughter, so you knocked up some
20 year old down the street? You know who else would've wanted to laugh? YOUR
FUCKING LONG SUFFERING WIFE. Laugh with her, asshole. You think you're the only
one that suffered or the only one whose dreams didn't come true? Nope. You
fucked over your stepson, too. You did to him what society did to you. What's
your excuse? Oh, you're a piece of shit. You're abusive. Oh, you were abused,
too? Did you like it? No? THEN WHY THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING THE SAME SHIT? Just
because you eventually die of old age after ruining everyone's life doesn't
redeem you. I am not sad that you're dead. I wish you had died sooner. You're
dead. Good. Everyone who ever knew you and loved you is finally free.
Ward-Kovalev Fight: Kovalev got too big. He wasn't used to
moving all that weight around and wore himself out. (I really need to get back
into watching boxing.)
Tried to watch, but couldn't get into them: Van Helsing (Netflix
show); Doctor Strange; Gallowwalkers; Ozark (Netflix show); Cloud Atlas; Hands
of Stone; Marvel's The Defenders (but I loved Jessica Jones!); Hell or High
Water (I was so looking forward to that one, too.); Wonder Woman (terrible)
READING-
Unwind (YA Series): I finished the first two books. The first
book was okay. meh
Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell: I made it almost halfway through
before all of the opportunities I've squandered throughout my life started
flashing before my eyes and then I was too sad to finish. So, so many.
Whatever. All I can do is be better about any that come up in the future.
I think I also finished half an Oprah magazine. I've been very
upset about my lack of reading - my lack of wanting to read and liking to read
books, but I also felt like I didn't like movies/tv shows anymore - like I was
broken or something. But then I found a few shows that I really liked and felt
an urge to watch. So, I'm going to try to not be upset and just wait for the
universe to start sending books my way again.
Looking forward to: Hunger by Roxane Gay. I loved Bad Feminist
and Difficult Women by her. She is also amazing on Twitter.
